Tsarevets Fortress - the symbol of Veliko Tarnovo
Tsarevets Fortress is the most significant historical landmark of Veliko Tarnovo and one of the most impressive testimonies to the medieval greatness of Bulgaria. Located on the hill of the same name, surrounded by the Yantra River, the fortress was the heart of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom (1185-1393).
Historical significance
During the golden age of medieval Bulgaria, Tsarevets was the royal city - a fortified capital, where the palaces of the Bulgarian kings and the patriarchal residence were built. Famous rulers such as Ivan Asen II, under whom Bulgaria reached its peak, ruled here. The fortress was the administrative, spiritual and cultural center of the country for over two centuries.
Architecture and landmarks
The massive fortress walls, over 1000 meters long and over 400 preserved buildings, reveal the scale of the medieval city. At the top of the hill rises the restored **Patriarchal Church of the "Ascension of the Lord"**, whose walls are decorated with modern frescoes depicting key moments in Bulgarian history.
**Baldwin's Tower**, located in the western part of the fortress, is connected with the dramatic story of the Latin Emperor Baldwin of Flanders, captured by Tsar Kaloyan after the Battle of Edirne in 1205.
Sound and Light
Every evening, when weather permits, a unique **audiovisual show "Sound and Light"** is held in Tsarevets. Laser beams, music and lighting bring the history of the fortress to life, turning the visit into an unforgettable experience.
Practical information
Tsarevets is open to visitors year-round. A walk through the fortress offers not only a historical excursion, but also a panoramic view of Veliko Tarnovo - the old and new towns, merging in picturesque harmony among the meanders of the Yantra River.
This is a place where every stone tells a story, and the spirit of the Bulgarian Middle Ages is still alive.
