Preobrazhenski Monastery - a spiritual fortress above Veliko Tarnovo

The Preobrazhenski Monastery "Holy Transfiguration of the Lord" is one of the most significant spiritual centers in Bulgaria, located about 7 kilometers north of Veliko Tarnovo. Clinging to the sheer cliffs above the Yantra River, the monastery impresses not only with its historical significance, but also with its picturesque location.

Historical past


Founded in the 14th century, during the Second Bulgarian Kingdom, the Preobrazhenski Monastery was an important spiritual and literary center. During the centuries of Ottoman rule, the monastery played a key role in preserving Bulgarian spirituality, education and culture. 

During the Bulgarian Renaissance, the monastery became a center of national awakening. The famous **Trevna Art School** operated here, whose masters created remarkable frescoes and woodcarvings.

Architectural treasures

The monastery complex impresses with its harmonious integration into the rocky terrain. The buildings are built on different levels, following the natural relief.

The main church, consecrated to the Transfiguration of the Lord, is a true work of art. The frescoes, executed by masters of the Tryavna School in the 19th century, are exceptional in their elegance and richness of detail. The iconostasis is a masterpiece of woodcarving - the fine ornaments and biblical scenes are sculpted with incredible craftsmanship.

Spiritual and cultural center

Over the centuries, the monastery has been a literary center, where valuable manuscripts were copied and stored. A number of prominent clergymen and writers worked here, contributing to the preservation of Bulgarian literature and culture.

Today, the Preobrazhensky Monastery is an active male monastery that welcomes pilgrims and tourists from all over Bulgaria and abroad. The tranquility of the place, combined with the majestic nature around, creates a unique atmosphere for reflection and spiritual renewal.

The monastery courtyard and the surrounding terraces offer a stunning panorama of the meanders of the Yantra River and the surrounding hills. The view of "Eagle Stone" - a rocky crown that rises opposite is particularly impressive.

How to get there

The monastery is easily accessible from Veliko Tarnovo - about 15 minutes by car on an asphalt road. You can visit it independently or as part of an organized tour, which often includes other sights in the region.
