Assenevtsi Monument - a symbol of Bulgarian freedom
The Asenevtsi Monument is one of the most impressive and symbolic monuments in Bulgaria, rising majestically on the "Tsarevets" hill in Veliko Tarnovo. The creation of the famous Bulgarian sculptor Krum Damyanov, the monument was inaugurated on May 24, 1985 in honor of the 800th anniversary of the Uprising of Asen and Peter.
Historical symbolism
The monument commemorates the feat of the brothers Asen and Peter, who in 1185 revolted against Byzantine rule and restored the Bulgarian state. This event marked the beginning of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom (1185-1396) - a period of rise, cultural flourishing and military victories.
The Asenovs are the most glorious Bulgarian royal dynasty, giving Bulgaria rulers such as Ivan Asen II, under whom the country reached its political and cultural zenith, stretching from the Black to the White, Aegean and Adriatic Seas.
Architecture and symbolism
The monument consists of four bronze figures, 7 meters high, placed on a massive stone pedestal:
- Tsar Peter with a sword in his hand
- Tsar Asen with a raised sword
- Tsar Kaloyan with a battle axe
- Tsar Ivan Asen II with a cross and sword
The four rulers are depicted in dynamic, powerful poses, symbolizing determination, strength and readiness to defend the fatherland. They seem to forever guard Veliko Tarnovo and the Bulgarian land.
The stone pedestal is decorated with reliefs depicting episodes from the glorious past of the Second Kingdom - battles, victories and moments of spiritual ascension.
Location
The monument is located in a strategic place - at the main entrance to Tsarevets Fortress, where the western entrance to the medieval capital once stood. From this point, a magnificent panorama of the old town and the Yantra River opens up.
The monument welcomes every visitor to the fortress, reminding of Bulgaria's glorious past and the spirit of freedom that has never faded in the Bulgarian people.
National symbol
The Asenevtsi Monument has become one of the most recognizable symbols of Veliko Tarnovo and all of Bulgaria. Its image can be found on postage stamps, photographs, souvenirs and promotional materials. It is a place of national pride, where official celebrations are held, holidays are celebrated and wreaths are laid.

The monument is freely accessible for viewing throughout the day. It is an ideal starting point for a walk around Tsarevets Fortress and offers excellent photo opportunities with an incredible historical and natural panorama in the background.
The monument is especially impressive at sunset, when the bronze figures shimmer in golden glare, or in the evening, when it is illuminated and the kings seem to come to life in the twilight.
